Syfy Set for 31 Days of Halloween

Hershey treats back networks tricks

By Jon Lafayette -- Broadcasting & Cable, 9/30/2012 9:00:00 PM

Syfy is getting in costume for one of its favorite holidays, Halloween.

The network is again teaming up with NYC & Co. to stage events named for Syfy shows around New York's five boroughs. Nationally, viewers will be able to participate in sweepstakes through Syfy.com or via social media.

The 31 Days of Halloween programming stunt is sponsored by Hershey, which will have an expanded multiplatform presence, including ads on-air, on Syfy.com and outdoors around New York during the month. Hershey is also sponsoring October Movie Madness on Chiller, another NBCUniversal cable network. The Chiller sponsorship includes custom vignettes tied to the original shows Dead Souls and The American Scream.

During the 31 Days, Syfy will air a live episode of its makeup competition show, Face Off; special holiday episodes of Paranormal Witness and Haven; and two original movies, American Horror House and Rise of the Zombies.

31 Days of Halloween NYC events will be held in 14 city parks. The events include a Pooch Parade, Shocktoberfest and the annual Central Park Pumpkin Fest. The Syfy Halloween NYC Fest will be held in Flatiron Plaza Oct 26-28, with crafts, goodies, face-painting and music.

Viewers nationally will be able to participate in the mayhem through a GetGlue social media sweepstakes. People who check in to either four airings of any one show during the 31 Days or four of the network's special Halloween programs will get a sticker and entry to win an NBC Store prize package.

A National Flyaway Sweepstakes is available to visitors of Syfy.com. Prizes include airfare on JetBlue to New York, a two-night stay at Yotel hotel, VIP seating at the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade and a holiday makeover by Spirit Halloween. Last year's sweepstakes drew nearly 100,000 entries.

Syfy will be promoting its 31 Days of Halloween with an outdoor campaign blanketing bus shelters, light poles, newsstands, phone booths and taxi TV screens.

"Once again, Syfy is thrilled to work with NYC & Company to bring this rich selection of family friendly events throughout the five boroughs," said Michael Engleman, executive VP, marketing and global brand strategy for the network.

"Thousands of New Yorkers and visitors gather each year in New York City to celebrate Halloween," said George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Co., the city's official marketing organization. "Every year, the holiday generates excitement across the five boroughs and showcases New York City's vibrant atmosphere. 31 Days of HalloweeNYC offers an array of unique experiences for every age and interest all month-long."

Adam Copeland To Undergo Neck Surgery

One of the biggest news stories of 2011 was WWE Superstar Edge, real name Adam Copeland, announcing his retirement on Monday Night Raw just two weeks after having successfully retained the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXVII against Alberto Del Rio.

The toll of working a full time WWE schedule on a surgically repaired neck for seven years had finally caught up with him. He'd started suffering from numbness and uncontrollable trembling in his arms and hands, so he had an MRI performed with WWE's Medical Director Dr. Joseph Maroon, who subsequently diagnosed him with spinal stenosis, a condition that wrestling with would risk paralysis or even death and one that couldn't be completely cured. Therefore, Dr. Maroon concluded that he would never clear his patient to wrestle for WWE ever again.

Season Three Premiere of Syfy's 'Haven' Becomes #1 Primetime Drama Among Adults 25-54 on September 21

via press release:

SEASON THREE PREMIERE OF SYFY’S HAVEN BECOMES #1 PRIMETIME DRAMA AMONG ADULTS 25-54 ON SEPTEMBER 21

NEW YORK – September 24, 2012 – The season three premiere of Syfy’s hit drama series Haven became the #1 primetime drama on cable in Adults 25-54 during its telecast on Friday, September 21 from 10-11 PM (ET/PT).

The delivery of 899,000 Adults 25-54 was up 13 percent from the season two premiere and represented the series’ best delivery in that demo in two years (September 2010).

Haven also drew 2.0 million total viewers, up six percent versus the July 2011 season two premiere.

In the premiere, Haven picked up immediately following the events of the gripping season two finale with Audrey (Emily Rose) having been kidnapped; Nathan (Lucas Bryant) warned against pursuing a romantic relationship with Audrey; and Duke (Eric Balfour) seemingly engaged in a fight to the death with Nathan after he discovers his family lineage is to kill Haven citizens with Troubles.

This season’s guest stars include Iain Glen (Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey), Bree Williamson (Gossip Girl, One Life To Live), Laura Vandervoort (Smallville, White Collar), Edge (WWE Superstar), Dorian Missick (Southland, The Cape), Kate Kelton (Harold and Kumar, American Psycho 2), Nolan North (Uncharted video game series, Pretty Little Liars), and Claudia Black (Uncharted video game series, Farscape).

Following last year’s successful innovative Twitter campaign, season three will introduce online viewers to a new entity in the Haven mythology—The Guard. Mysterious and deeply entrenched in the history of Haven, The Guard has hijacked Haven social media channels to get their message out—if you are troubled, we can help #EscapeToHaven by @TheGuardHaven. The Guard—represented by Kate Kelton, who portrays ’Jordan McKee” — has taken over Facebook (facebook.com/haven), YouTube (youtube.com/syfyimaginegreater) and Twitter profiles for Haven (Twitter.com/TheGuardHaven), using these social media channels to tell the story of Haven, and to attract new “recruits” to Haven.

Haven, based on the novella The Colorado Kid from renowned author Stephen King, follows former FBI agent Audrey Parker, who becomes a cop in the small town of Haven, Maine, and soon discovers the town’s many secrets, which also hold the key to unlocking the mysteries of her lost past.

From leading independent studio Entertainment One (eOne), Haven is co-commissioned by Shaw Media in Canada and globally via Universal Networks International (UNI).

The creative team behind Haven includes executive producers John Morayniss (The Firm, Hell On Wheels) from eOne Television and David MacLeod (Legends of the Fall, The Ray Bradbury Theater) of Big Motion Pictures, who are joined by Lloyd Segan, Shawn Piller, Scott Shepherd (Stephen King’s The Dead Zone, Greek) of Piller/Segan/Shepherd and Matt McGuinness (Journeyman, Dark Blue) as well as Sam Ernst & Jim Dunn (Stephen King’s The Dead Zone), who also developed the series.

Haven is produced by Entertainment One and Big Motion Pictures in association with Piller/Segan/Shepherd and airs on Syfy in the U.S., Showcase in Canada and internationally on Universal Networks International’s channels. Entertainment One controls the worldwide distribution rights to the one-hour series and concluded a deal with Germany’s Tele München Group (TMG) for the television rights in Continental Europe.

Article: The Three Amigos – Haven’s Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant & Eric Balfour

Haven's Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant and Eric Balfour are hilarious. Their natural chemistry came across in the interview and triply made me look forward to ‘Haven's return this Friday.

I have a collective crush on Haven’s three lead actors, Emily Rose (Audrey/Lucy), Lucas Bryant (Nathan) and Eric Balfour (Duke). Just as Carla described in her SDCC interview, listening to the Three Musketeers — AKA the Three Amigos AKA three peas in a pod — interact is amazingly awesome. It reminded me of my Community conference calls with Jim Rash/Gillian Jacobs and Alison Brie/Danny Pudi. When you get a group of actors who interact well together, the energy comes across in the interview and on screen.

The wryly dry-humored Lucas Bryant joked that Eric Balfour “punches like a girl,” while claiming that playing the curmudgeonly yet emotionally vulnerable sherriff helped him to find and “strap” on his “private parts.” All three joked they could see the writers on the line because they’re on a “sci-fi show” and they can do that. While I almost cried foul when Eric described himself as a nerdy science fiction fan, I realized it explained a lot about his acting choices. But, let’s be honest, no one THAT pretty is into sci fi!

Fall 2012: Haven "301" Season 3 Premiere (2)

Haven has a knack for starting off each new season with a short, but incredibly comprehensive recap. Before watching “301″ I had planned to go back and rewatch all the crazy stuff that happened last season, but I didn’t have time, so I was a little worried that I would have forgotten some of the minor details that would be important going into this season.

My worries were unfounded, because that recap was a perfect refresher and I was ready to jump in right where we left off last season: Audrey was missing, while Duke and the newly tattooed Nathan got into a bad brawl that seemed to end with a gunshot.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

10 Things to Know Before You Watch 'Haven' Season 3

You really should plan to watch Haven season 3 on Syfy.

But maybe you have forgotten what happened back in season 2 -- it was over a year ago, after all. Or perhaps you are a newcomer to the weird joys of Haven. If that's the case, there are definitely some things you need to know before you start Haven season 3. Here are 10 of the most important.

WARNING: If you have not seen earlier seasons of the show, there are some super-big Haven spoilers in this article. That's kind of the point, actually. But if you don't want to know what happened in the first two seasons, you probably shouldn't read this.

Haven tells the story of a small town in Maine full of people who can do weird things. Most of these things, called Troubles, are dangerous. All of these things are weird. The show's main characters -- Audrey Parker (Emily Rose), Nathan Wuornos (Lucas Bryant) and Duke Crocker (Eric Balfour) -- spend a great deal of time finding the "Troubled" people and dealing with the fallout.

Unfortunately, a general description of Haven, like the above paragraph, does not exactly prepare you for season 3. Here are some specifics that you must know.

1. Audrey Parker

Audrey is complicated. For one thing, she's not really FBI Special Agent Audrey Parker. Audrey just has the memories of that woman. Who is Audrey really? We're not sure yet, but she appears in Haven at odd intervals (coinciding with outbreaks of the Troubles) -- always with a new name and always the same age. In the 1980s, she was Lucy. Sometime around the 1950s or 1960s, she was Sarah. Before that, who knows?

Interview: Executive Producer Jim Dunn Cracks Open the Treasure Chest of Season Three Secrets

The third season of HAVEN is not just about bigger and better mysteries, it is a season that promises answers.  When co-creators and executive producers Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn first started the show, they wanted viewers to focus on the questions of:  What is going on with Audrey?  And where does it all lead?  And this is the season we get answers to those burning questions.  However, it should be cautioned that season three will also bring up new mysteries to be solved, one of which will lead to a cliffhanger that fans should be prepared for in the finale.  The one promise is, that no matter what questions arise or which mysteries are solved, fans will enjoy finding it all out.

In a recent exclusive interview, executive producer Jim Dunn provided a few hints and teasers about what Season 3 will offer and what is going on with the new characters that show up this season.

Interview: Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant, Eric Balfour And Executive Producer Lloyd Segan Talk Haven Season 3

Haven Season 3

Season Three of Haven finds Audrey Parker, Nathan Wuornos and Duke Crocker learning more about themselves while facing the townspeople’s “troubles” as well as the growing influence of The Guard. TV Equals learned more about this season from Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant, Eric Balfour and executive producer Lloyd Segan during a conference call.

What to expect this season
The stars talked about how their characters are changing this season. Overall, everyone is in for some big surprises.

“I think Audrey, the first season she just kind of is curious when she finds a connection with the place of Haven, that there’s something there about herself,” said Rose. “And then by Season Three, she’s facing some really, really dark, dark, dark, questions regarding who she is and there’s a - sort of a clock in play. So, it’s really, really hard and I think she’s in a really, really hard place all season. It’s not a fun place for her to be in mentally.”

Interview: Dorian Missick on Bringing Some Big City Drama to the Sleepy Town of HAVEN in Season Three

Even in a town as odd as Haven, things can get just a bit odder when someone new comes to town.  In this case, when Detective Tommy Bowen tracks the trail of a murderer all the way to Haven, not only does he have a few secrets of his own, but his arrival offers a unique chance to see how an outsider views all the “troubles” plaguing Haven.  Fortunately, for Tommy, not much fazes him; after all, that’s what being a cop is all about: dealing with the unusual, the unexpected and the downright spooky.

Given such an interesting role to play, Dorian Missick had a ball working on the third season of HAVEN. Looking through Tommy’s eyes, Haven is just a very weird place with even weirder inhabitants.  The “did I just see that?” reaction of Dorian, as Tommy, is priceless.  As fans and viewers of HAVEN, we have grown accustomed to seeing giant balls roll down Main Street and seeing entire buildings collapse right before our eyes.  But, by all accounts, those things are not normal.

Interview: Bree Williamson Previews Her Role in HAVEN Season Three

When HAVEN returns, there will be a few new faces populating the tiny town of Haven.  One newcomer is Bree Williamson who portrays the vivacious Dr. Claire Callahan.  Just where has the town’s resident psychiatrist been hiding?  Well, like all good things in Haven, people pop up not only when you least expect it, but they also appear just when they are needed to – and for a town suddenly plagued with “troubles,” there is a desperate need for a therapist.

Dr. Callahan is someone that both the “troubled” and non-“troubled” can talk to as she seems virtually unfazed by the upsurge of unique issues being presented on her therapy couch.  In fact, Claire seems to relish the fact that she can finally be of service in this time of crisis and need.  So willing or not, anyone dealing with Haven’s “troubles” is going to get a little help from Dr. Callahan.  This includes the reluctant Audrey Parker – who, in her short 6 month stay in Haven, has not only found out that her name is not really Audrey Parker, she may have actually lived in Haven as a prior incarnation of herself 27 years before as a woman known as Lucy and decades before that as a woman known as Sarah.  Audrey Parker is the ultimate therapist dream-come-true: an amnesiac with a supernatural twist.

So in a recent exclusive interview, Bree Williamson shared a little bit of insight about who Dr. Claire Callahan is and how she fits into the HAVEN world.

Interview: Meet Kate Kelton, Season Three’s Mystery Woman

Portraying the most controversial of the new characters introduced in HAVEN this season, Kate Kelton is the woman to keep a close eye on.  Her character Jordan McKee maybe a waitress at Haven’s Gun & Rose café, but as fans who have been following the digital media campaign on Twitter are well aware, Jordan is also the face of the mysterious organization known as The Guard.  Actively recruiting the “troubled” from the four corners to “Escape to Haven” (#EscapeToHaven on Twitter), Jordan appears to be the benign face of a group of people offering sanctuary and a safe haven for those who feel persecuted, excluded and simply afraid of how their abilities set them apart in a world where “special” is interpreted as “strange” and something to be feared.

But like everything else in HAVEN, nothing is exactly what it appears on the surface.  Jordan McKee is not as benign as she looks and The Guard may not have the “troubled’s” best interests at heart.  In fact, fellow Haven-ite Dwight Hendrickson (Adam Copeland) has stepped forward with a video campaign of his own denouncing The Guard — though given that there is a history between Dwight and Jordan, there may be more than just an ideological difference of opinion going on.

HAVEN 3 Filming Ends & A New Season Begins

Posted: September 6, 2012
It's hard to believe – but today marks the last official filming day on the third season of HAVEN.

I'm imagining it seems a smidge longer for the cast and crew who worked through wind and rain, the hot summer heat and the long, long hours – but for me April 18th was just a blink ago.

As someone based at ground zero (aka Chester, Nova Scotia) the HAVEN team have become a truly cool fixture in our village throughout the spring and summer months. Watching them weave in and out of businesses and fields, beaches and barns, wooded lots and wonderful old homes is as awesome to witness off screen as it is seeing the scenes on TV.

It was great to have stars Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant and Eric Balfour resume their 'seasonal resident' status – I even got to sit with them at a mutual friend's wedding this summer.... this is my only proof...I swear that's me.

Wrapping Up Haven

Haven cast members Lucas Bryant and Emily Rose. Photo: Michael Tompkins

By | Sep 17, 2012

Hit Syfy series Haven wrapped up production for its third season this month in Chester, Nova Scotia. Based on author Stephen King’s “The Colorado Kid,” the show is centered around a mysterious and supernatural town in Maine. Cast and crew were still on the set when they joined a one-hour Q&A media conference call on September 6, chatting about the characters and upcoming season.

Cast members Emily Rose, Eric Balfour and Lucas Bryant had plenty of memorable moments to share. And while they’re not new to the province, the group’s experience was a bit different this time around. “We knew more people, and so that created more opportunities to see Nova Scotia and really feel like part of the family,” says Rose, who plays FBI agent Audrey Parker in the series. The trio also noted Nicki’s Inn in Chester. “I will miss Nicki’s the most because I love Nicki,” says Balfour, Haven’s Duke Crocker. “But I think that actually speaks to a greater truth, which is the people that we work with and live with here and the community that we’ve made. You know, this summer has been the most fun we’ve had in the three years we’ve been here,” he says.

From surfing and tidal rafting to attending local weddings; the crew even had the opportunity to film in a well-known haunted building for its upcoming Halloween episode, directed by Jason Priestley. “Yes, it was creepy,” says Rose.

Chester is the main filming location for the show. The third season of Haven launches on Showcase September 28. “I think this season just feels like the show’s really got its game on,” says Bryant, who plays a local cop in the television series. “A lot of big questions and big mysteries are answered in a way that they haven’t been up until now,” he says.

Interview: Adam Copeland Previews His Troubling Role as Dwight “The Cleaner”

When a town has as many secrets as Haven does, there is a particular need for a resourceful man to clean up and help keep the secrets buried.  In HAVEN, that man is Dwight Hendrickson, portrayed by former WWE wrestler Adam Copeland (also known as “Edge”).  Bringing his strong presence to a multi-layered character, Adam conveys both a powerful physicality and emotional resonance to Dwight.  Right away fans took notice of the character that suddenly felt like he had been living amongst the HAVEN world from the beginning.  In a recent exclusive interview, Adam shared what he loves about playing Dwight and his unique “trouble.”  He also hinted at a possible past romance in Dwight’s life that will stir things up again for Dwight this season.

Your character Dwight has been a fan favorite right from the start.  It’s really great to see a character break out like that.
ADAM:
It is an interesting character.  There’s a lot of different ways to go with Dwight.  How do I put it?  There’s a bit of air of mystery, and he’s a good guy, but you don’t necessarily know for sure if he’s a good guy.  I think that’s what they wanted, so I tried to play it understated, I guess.

Interview: Lucas Bryant Teases Season Three

As fans of the Syfy series HAVEN are well aware, the show’s hero Nathan Wuornos (portrayed by Lucas Bryant) is cursed with an affliction (or “trouble” as such things are known in Haven) that prevents him from physically feeling anything.  It was thus with unexpected surprise and joy that Nathan accidentally discovered that for whatever reason he could feel the touch of Audrey Parker (Emily Rose), a newcomer to Haven. It was a secret that Nathan concealed for the better part of the first season of HAVEN and one which, after known, created a tantalizing prospect of a romance between Nathan and Audrey in the second season.

But just as they were about to step in that direction, the second season finale snatched that possibility away with Audrey’s untimely kidnapping.  The “troubles” of Haven had struck again and this time it was straight through the heart.  In a recent exclusive sit-down interview, star Lucas Bryant provided insight as to how the third season of HAVEN will offer further roadblocks in the romance between Nathan and Audrey and what role the new characters have to play in their increasingly complicated lives.
